Mavs claim conference title with 11-6 victory

It wasn’t a pretty victory, nor one that struck fear into other teams headed into the playoffs. But for Manchester Academy, Tuesday night’s 11-6 victory over Winston was perfection.
With that win, the Mavericks captured their conference championship with just one loss on their record.
“This means a great deal to these players,” Manchester head coach A.J. Downs said. “Last year we came up just short and that just made our seniors even more hungry this year. Everybody wanted this and now that we have it, we have a shot at playing for a state title. Once you get into the playoffs, you never know what’s going to happen.”

Lady Panthers lose heartbreaker

If the Lady Panthers of Yazoo County was to have a shot at winning its district championship, they needed a win at Cleveland Tuesday night. Despite their best efforts, it was the Lady Wildcats who managed to create a single run in the seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie.
With the 3-2 loss, the Lady Panthers won’t be able to win their district. However, they are still in a position to make the playoffs.
Yazoo County currently sits behind Cleveland (lost both matches) and Germantown (lost first game) in the district standings. Luckily, the top three teams from each district advance to the playoffs.

Boys & Girls Club to start adult basketball league

Beginning this May there will be a new way to show of your team basketball skills.
The Boys & Girls Club in Yazoo City will be starting the first annual season of its Adult Basketball League on May 14, with the post season tournament lasting until June 30. Registration for the league is already open and will remain open until April 27.

Mavs escape close call

Senior Mary Moses Hitt faced some stiff competition to remain undefeated.By TAYLOR MITCHELL

Mary Moses Hitt took to the court for her recent tennis match just after 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. It wouldn’t be until 4:45 p.m. that she left the court with her undefeated high school record intact with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Hitt’s performance was an impressive one, but it was the lone victory by Burns Morrison and Adam Erickson (6-2, 6-2) among the boys’ matches that allowed Manchester to escape with a 5-4 victory.
The Lady Mavs won all four of their matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Elizabeth Woodlif over Jessi Cole in the No. 2 girls singles match. Annie Peaster and Lucie Harbour defeated Mary Gray and Margaret Hay 6-0, 6-2 to win their match. Mary Morgan Mohamed and Margaret Dent won their match 6-2, 6-1.

Panthers hold steady with win

The showdown for Friday night’s Yazoo County-Cleveland game was set Tuesday night when the Panthers moved to within one win of .500 after defeating Amanda Elzy 14-1.
“We needed to win Tuesday to set up a show down with Cleveland on Friday night for a shot at first place,” Yazoo County head coach Corbin Ellis said. “We were a little slow out of the gate but came on in the 3rd and 4th inning to put them away.”
