Everybody is a copycat in the sporting world

The Mitchell ReportThe Mitchell ReportI’ve heard that the NFL is a copycat league several times. One team sees something that works and every other team begins to do the same thing.
But that’s not true for just the NFL, but rather the entire sporting world. Heck, even sports writers tend to copy one another. When something works, or when something appears to work (remember the resurgence of the wildcat that didn’t work), everybody else wants to do the same thing to obtain that success and, most importantly, the money.
That’s what the NCAA did when it added the “play-in” game to the men’s national basketball tournament. Then they added three more “play-in” games.
Apparently, the MHSAA thought that was a good idea. So good in fact, they took the first round of the baseball and softball playoffs and made those play-in rounds.
Play-in to what?
Are these teams playing this weekend in the playoffs or not? If so, then I’m not sure what they’re playing in too. If not, then the MHSAA pulled off a quick one by eliminating a round of the playoffs.
Is it for intrigue? No, because the first round (good luck getting me to call it a play-in round) is still a three-game series. Maybe it’d be more intriguing if it was just a single game played, but that’s a stupid idea that would require a column by itself. Well, if it’s not to add excitement then it must be about the money. Wrong again. Nobody will make extra money because it’s not like there has been an extra round added to the playoffs. You’ll still get the same amount of people coming to games as there were a year ago (unless the weather keeps staying wet).
So, why call the real first round of the playoffs the “play-in round”?
To me, a simple sports writer in Yazoo City, the answer to that question is that somebody saw the term “play-in”, thought it would add some extra drama/intrigue to the playoffs and next thing you know we have the play-in round.
It’s stupid.

The Yazoo City baseball team knew it’s road to the playoffs wasn’t a difficult one.
With four teams in District3-5A, all the Indians needed was a pair of victories over one team to make the playoffs. On Friday afternoon, Yazoo City got its second win against Canton to wrap up the third seed in the upcoming MHSAA 5A playoffs.
Unfortunately, the Indians won’t be headed into the post season with too much momentum after suffering a pair of losses to Vicksburg over the weekend.
In the first half of the double header, the Indians seventh inning comeback came up just one run short in a 7-6 loss. The offense would be non-existent for much of the second game as Yazoo City recorded just two hits in a 15-1 loss.

Home lake advantage helps Yazoo BASSMaster dominate tournament

Special to The Editor

The Yazoo BASSMasters held a tournament recently at Ross Barnett Reservoir. The conditions were tough, with post-cold front, bluebird skies greeting the anglers as we launched at Tommy's Trading Post. Here are the Top 5 from that event:
1. Matt Smith - 5 bass. Total weight: 11lbs. 7oz. Big bass was 4lbs. 4oz, which was the Tournament Big Bass.
2. Dewey Hood - 5 bass. Total weight: 8lbs. 11oz. Big bass weighed 3lbs. 4oz.
3. Jason Griffin - 4 bass Total weight: 4lbs. 7oz. Big bass was 1lb. 8oz.
4. Rick Morgan - 1 bass. Total weight: 2lbs. 13oz.
5. Dave Jones - 1 bass. Total weight: 2lbs. 11oz.
The top lures were crankbaits, topwater frogs, soft plastic lizard, & jerkbaits. Jason Griffin was quoted as saying he had "about 2 ounces of SuspenStrips on his Rapala jerkbait". SuspenStrips are adhesive strips of metal that are applied to floating lures to make them suspend.
The Yazoo BASSMasters will meet Friday, April 20, 2012 at 7p.m. at Stubb’s Restaurant. The May tournament specifics will be set at this meeting. The club fishes 8 tournaments/year, with the best 6 tournaments counting towards End of the Year awards. Membership dues are $15/year. Tournament entry fees are $10/event, with an optional one dollar each for the yearly & tournament Big Bass pots. There will be a $10 “fruit jar” side pot to each tournament, with the top angler in the fruit jar winning the pot money. Entry into the tournament’s “fruit jar” pot is strictly the discretion of the angler. Meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of each month, with the awards banquet held in December. For more information, contact club president Dewey Hood at 571-7513 or Will Edgar at 571-7589.
