The great New York Mets pitcher Tom Seaver once said, “In baseball, my theory is to strive for consistency, not to worry about the numbers. If you dwell on statistics you get shortsighted, if you aim for consistency, the numbers will be there at the end.” Consistency is the key to successful baseball and can only be achieved by playing continuously, in some cases, for years and years. However, for the youth of Yazoo City, there has been a gap in playing that has kept some players of the field. “They (13 and 14 year olds) get to participate in high school baseball, but they don’t play much,” Jack Willingham, a sergeant with the Yazoo County sheriff’s department and youth baseball coach, said. “Your kids are losing two years of baseball.” That has changed now that the Pony League has taken over Tuesday and Thursday nights at Joe White Field. “It’s been great to see these kids have something to do,” Willingham said. “Baseball is my life. I played in (the Pony League) when I was that age. It was my thing to do. I’d go outside by myself and bounce the ball off of the wall. It still is my thing.” -------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------

Delta State head coach Mike Kinnison’s Statesmen lost for the first time at the CWS in Cary, N.C. after failing to push a single run across home plate, 1-0 to Minnestoa State-Mankato.By TAYLOR MITCHELL Sports Editor
CARY, N.C. – After winning their first two games of the College World Series, the Delta State Statesmen fell victim to Minnesota State Mankato 1-0. However, it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities by the Statesmen. Delta State (48-14) had runners in scoring position several times Thursday afternoon, but no wasted opportunity hurt more than the one in the top of the eighth. Needing just one run to extend the game, the Statesmen put runners on first and third with just one out in the inning. Mavericks’ starter Tyler Ockuly met with his teammates on the mound as Michael Vinson walked to the plate. On the first pitch, Vinson hit a ground ball straight to the second baseman, who flipped the ball to the covering short stop at second before throwing the ball to first base, where Vinson was called out after appearing safe. Vinson, a junior from Southaven, threw his helmet on the ground in anger and was ejected from the game. Replays, however, appear to show Vinson stepping on first base just moments before the ball reached first base. -------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------
