For the first time since 1990, the Yazoo City Indians are the 2013 Region 3-5A Champions.
Yazoo City beat its arch-rival, 15th-ranked Neshoba Central, 8-2 to complete a season sweep of the Rockets.
With the win, the Indians receive a bye for the first round of the playoffs, and won’t play until May 2.
Indians skipper Gerald Peyton was excited about his team’s relentless effort.
“What a great day to be an Indian,” Peyton said. “It finally paid off for us. With all of the negativity surrounding Yazoo City, this was a great way for my graduating seniors to go out on top.”
The Rockets scored their only two runs in the first inning off of a Indians fielding error.
However, the Indians answered when Gabriel Campbell belted a RBI single to right center field to make it 2-1.
Keon Jones followed to tie the game on a RBI single to bring it to 2-2

Taking the mound Tuesday afternoon in Pheba, Derrick Martin looked confident after the first inning, striking out two of the first three Hebron Christian batters, as his no-hitter possibilities grew even stronger after that point in the game.
In the opening of the MAIS First Round of the playoffs, the district 4-A champs and number one ranked Tri-County handled business with an excellent performance on the mound and pop in the batter’s box as the Rebels rattled Hebron Christian with nineteen hits and eighteen runs to run-rule the Eagles 18-0 after four innings. The game one victory bodes well for a possible deep run into the playoffs for Tri-County.
