For the first time since 1990, the Yazoo City Indians are the 2013 Region 3-5A Champions.
Yazoo City beat its arch-rival, 15th-ranked Neshoba Central, 8-2 to complete a season sweep of the Rockets.
With the win, the Indians receive a bye for the first round of the playoffs, and won’t play until May 2.
Indians skipper Gerald Peyton was excited about his team’s relentless effort.
“What a great day to be an Indian,” Peyton said. “It finally paid off for us. With all of the negativity surrounding Yazoo City, this was a great way for my graduating seniors to go out on top.”
The Rockets scored their only two runs in the first inning off of a Indians fielding error.
However, the Indians answered when Gabriel Campbell belted a RBI single to right center field to make it 2-1.
Keon Jones followed to tie the game on a RBI single to bring it to 2-2
