The Manchester tennis team competed in the district tournament Monday in Jackson at the Parham Bridges tennis center.
The boys’ team won the runner-up trophy and the girls tied with runner-up Canton, but lost the tie-breaker for the trophy.  The Mavs will travel to Grenada next Tuesday for the North State tennis tournament.
Seniors Blanton Crisler and Josh Peaster led the Mavericks by winning the No. 1 boys doubles district championship 7-5, 6-1 over the Winston Academy team in the finals.  Crisler’s strong all-around game was running full throttle throughout the match, and Peaster heated up in the second set as the team pulled away for a convincing win.

Indian netters season ends

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Yazoo City Indians tennis team recently concluded the 2013 season in the District Tournament held in Starkville. The Indians finished the season with a 2-7 overall record and failed to have anyone qualify for the State Tournament for the first time in the last five seasons.
“We’re used to having at least one team qualify for the state tournament, but this year was tough,” said YHS head coach Joffre Washington. “Going into the season, I thought both of our Girl’s Doubles teams had a chance to make it. They carried us all year long and had great regular seasons, but we just fell a little short in the tournament.”
