The Manchester Academy tennis team won the runner-up trophy at the North State AA tennis tournament this past Tuesday in Grenada falling just short of North State Champion Oak Hill Academy.
“I am really proud of how all our kids fought and showed great resilience against some tough competition,” commented Coach Debbie Crisler. “I believe this is the most teams we’ve had qualify for State in many years and possibly ever.”
Manchester sent six teams to North State and five of them qualified for the State AA tournament next Wednesday at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. Teams had to reach the finals to qualify for the state tournament and will need to win two matches next week to capture a state championship.
The Mavs were once again led by seniors Blanton Crisler and Josh Peaster who won the #1 boys doubles championship with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Winston Academy. After losing their first set of the year, the Mavs gave the Winston boys no hope of an upset in the third set with really strong play in the decisive set. The M.A. boys won their semi-final match 6-0, 6-4 against River Oaks Academy. Crisler and Peaster are the only undefeated Maverick team on the year.
Senior Lucie Barbour and sophomore Annie Peaster won the #1 girls doubles championship with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over their conference rivals Hannah Peoples and Mary Grace Key from Leake Academy. Barbour and Peaster have evenly split with the Leake Academy girls in their four matches this year, but executed a smart game plan on Tuesday to win convincingly in the third and final set.
