Mavs lose in district opener

LOUISVILLE – Manchester Academy outscored Winston 21-17 in the second half, but the comeback wasn’t enough to propel the Mavericks to their first win, falling to the Patriots 51-21 Friday in district action.

The green and gold trailed 34-0 heading into the break after Winston quarterback  Tyler Sullivan threw for three touchdown passes in the first half.

Parker Jones made it a four possession game with a 21 yard rushing score before the defense returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown to close out the half.

Winston picked up right where they left off with a seven yard touchdown run to start the third quarter.

Manchester put themselves back in the game on the ensuing kickoff after Matt Peaster took it to the house for an 83 yard return and touchdown.

Later in the quarter, Peaster teamed up with Will Bearden for a 30 yard touchdown score.

Sullivan threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game before Winston closed out their scoring with a 20 yard field goal in fourth quarter
