WARREN DAVIS

Warren Preston Davis Jr., 75, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family and friends after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Monday at Parkview Church of God.
Warren, known by many as “Junior,” was a lifetime resident of Yazoo County. He was born on May 16, 1935 in the community of Scotland to Warren Preston Davis Sr. and Ernestine Wooten Davis. He was the eldest of nine children.
On June 29, 1957, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Howell. Together they raised their one loving and devoted son, Tim.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Ann Davis; his son, Tim Davis; his daughter-in-law, Judy; his two precious granddaughters, Kelsey and Karly Davis, all of Yazoo City;  his brothers, Leslie Davis of Bentonia, Charles Davis of Benton, Lewis Davis of Satartia and Terry Davis of Canton; his sisters, Ann Davis of Yazoo City and Marilynne Williams of Ridgeland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He touched so many lives and his spirit will live on in those he loved and those who loved him and he will never be forgotten.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Ernestine Davis and two brothers, William Allen Davis and Wayne Lee Davis.
Serving as pallbearers were his nephews Chris Allen, Jim Davis, Rodney Davis, William Davis, Brett Robinson and Thomas Wetzel.

KATHLEEN PATRICK

Kathleen Norman Patrick, 96, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 at the Martha Coker Green Houses.
Funeral services were Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father George Woodliff officiating. Burial followed at Hazlehurst City Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Patrick was born May 13, 1914 in Yazoo City to Thomas H. Norman and Juanita Harris Norman. She was a retired secretary and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L.A. Patrick.
Survivors include two sisters, Mabel N. Jordan of Yazoo City and Rosamond N. Humphries of Yazoo City; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Patrick Norman, John Humphries, John Book Jr., Harvey Norman, David Humphries and Tommy Book.

MA’KYLAN SMITH

Ma’Kylan Jerome Smith, 10 days old, died Sept. 25, 2010 at the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.
Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 29 under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Ma’Kylan was born Sept. 15, 2010 in Jackson to Latifah Yarnell Jackson and Mylan Jerome Smith.
Survivors include his parents; paternal grandparents, Michael and Karen Smith; maternal grandparents, Patricia Jackson and the late Ronnie Reed; great-grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Willie E. Smith, Ellen Barber and Allean Jackson; and a host of other friends and relatives.

MARIAH WHITEHEAD

Mariah Rose Whitehead, 9, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 at the Martha Coker Green Houses after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Monday at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Jon Vanlandingham officiating. Burial followed at Dover Cemetery under the direction of Sticklin-King Funeral Home.
Mariah was born Nov. 16, 2010 in New Orleans, La. to Rebecca Whitehead. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother; a sister, Mykayla Whitehead of New Orleans; grandmother, Angie Trobrough of New Orleans; maternal great-grandmother, Catherine Huffman of Petal; maternal great-grandfather, Frank Huffman; paternal great-grandmother, Rosemary James of Bentonia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Michael Whitehead.

JOE WILLIAMS

Joseph “Joe” Williams, 50, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2010.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Century Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Gwendolyn Sample officiating. Burial followed at Union Paradise Cemetery in Benton under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Williams was born Nov. 28, 1959 to Wilburn Williams Sr. and Bernice Jefferson Williams. He attended Linwood Elementary and Benton High School and was a member of Union Paradise A.M.E. Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lenel and Tempie Nelson Williams; and his mother.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Williams; six children, Joseph, Roderick, Jakesha, Tameka, Lakita and Detrick; father, Wilburn Williams Sr.; six brothers, Wilburn Jr. (Carolyn) of Yazoo City; George and David of Chicago, Sylvester (Vervia) of South Holland, Ill., and Undra and John Lester (Shirley) of Jackson; two sisters, Mildred Coleman of New Orleans, La. and Linda Powell (Benny) of Fort Wand, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Detrick Hollins, Rickel Jefferson, Hubert Nelson, Donald Williams, Sylvester Williams and Victor Williams.
Honorary pallbearers were Henry Dixon, Phillip Dixon Sr., Johnnie Williams, Lenel Williams Jr., Wilburn Williams Jr. and Wilburn Williams Sr.

 
Letters to the editor

Dear Editor:
In the 6 April 2013 edition of The Yazoo Herald you published a letter from Cynthia Fuller, "Thanks to (Van) Foster for helping get bridge replaced."
After reading this lettter, I had the impression that the bridge was completed and traffic was moving along normally.  
Wrong!  Last Sunday I was on my way to homecoming at Providence Baptist Church.  I turned north onto old 49 and saw the signs that the bridge was out.  I assumed that they hadn't gotten around to removing the signs.  I expected to cross Thompson Creek on the new bridge.  When I approached the creek the road was barricaded and construction equipment was down in the creek.
Perhaps The Herald can keep us updated as to the progress being made on the new bridge.
