On Citizenship Day, Sept. 17, the fifth and sixth grade social studies classes of Linwood School under the direction of Mrs. Susan Greer, began the week long observance of Consitution Week, Sept. 17-23, with an assembly program.
To the music, “Coming to America,” students dressed as citizens from all walks of life entered the gym through an arch of American flags being waved. The music and the energy of these young people was as electrifying as the program theme was touching.
Guest speaker Edd Peyton, a graduate of Yazoo City High School and the Naval Academy, was then introduced. Peyton told those students present that the Consitution defines what it means to be an American and sets the framework for our government. He reminded the students of the sacrifices made to secure the freedoms they have today and pointed out that the U.S. soldiers put their lives on the line everyday for our Constitution. Peyton concluded by saying the Constitution is a great document – it gives you benefits but also gives you burdens and responsibilities. He urged students to focus and take their education seriously stating that each grade is a building block to the next grade.
Yazoo Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Regent JoAnne Collins then had the honor to present two flags to Linwood School. She first presented the Mississippi flag which was procured in cooperation with State Rep. Bryant Clark’s office. It was flown over the State Capital in Jackson on Aug. 9 in honor of Linwood School.
A certificate containing this information was included with the flag.
The second flag Collins presented was a 5x8 American flag which was procured in cooperation with U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker’s office. It was flown over the U.S. Capital in Washington, D.C. in honor of Linwood School. A certificate containing this information was included with the flag. Gladys Ward, Yazoo Chapter flag chairman, deserves a big thank you for contacting both Rep. Clark and Sen. Wicker  to see that these flags were purchased and flown over the Capital buildings.
Collins closed her comments by noting how fitting it was to be presenting these flags on the 223rd anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.
Shaffer, principal of Linwood, received the flags for the school and thanked the Yazoo Chapter NSDAR, Regent Collins and Flag Chairman Ward.
Gregg Moseley, school board member, was also a special guest for the program.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor:
In the 6 April 2013 edition of The Yazoo Herald you published a letter from Cynthia Fuller, "Thanks to (Van) Foster for helping get bridge replaced."
After reading this lettter, I had the impression that the bridge was completed and traffic was moving along normally.
Wrong!  Last Sunday I was on my way to homecoming at Providence Baptist Church.  I turned north onto old 49 and saw the signs that the bridge was out.  I assumed that they hadn't gotten around to removing the signs.  I expected to cross Thompson Creek on the new bridge.  When I approached the creek the road was barricaded and construction equipment was down in the creek.
Perhaps The Herald can keep us updated as to the progress being made on the new bridge.
