Alderman says Boys and Girls Club needs help
By JAMIE PATTERSON
One city leader would like to lend a helping hand to a struggling youth program.
Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. asked the Board of Mayor and Aldermen last week to consider assisting the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club.
“The Boys and Girls Club is in trouble now,” Brent said. “Certain agencies are going to have to work together to keep (the club’s) head above the water.”
Brent said he has been speaking with local club members about the current financial hardships the club is facing. Utility and lease costs are cutting into the club’s already tight budget.
Brent said he was told the club pays about $200 a month to lease the former school building from the city school district. He said the club also pays about $1,400 a month in utilities.
“If we don’t do something, we will lose our Boys and Girls Club,” Brent said.
