Raiders win second straight
If the sight of the homecoming queen looking on provides a little extra motivation for a team, 28 of them must be downright inspirational.
That was the scene for Benton Academy’s 40th anniversary celebration Friday, and the Raiders provided the final ingredient for a perfect evening – a big victory.
Benton Academy defeated Central Holmes 36-12 Friday as the school celebrated four decades of success. At halftime Benton introduced many of the homecoming queens from over the years.
While many BA fans were excited to catch up on old times, on the field Raiders were focused solely on chalking up a second straight win as the team prepares to enter conference play. Benton dominated the first quarter with 28 unanswered points.
T.C. Saxton scored back-to-back touchdowns on one and 22-yard carries with Shane Cargil adding the extra point kicks for a 14-0 lead. Ryan Smith then delivered a pair of touchdowns of his own with 12 and six-yard runs. Cargil also added PAT kicks on Smith’s scores.
Central Holmes got on the board in the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass to cut it to 28-6 after the extra point attempt failed.
The Trojans stayed on the offensive early in the second half as with a one-yard touchdown run. This time a two-point conversion attempt failed.
