Adult entertainment zone proposal raises eyebrows in meeting
By JAMIE PATTERSON
Some citizens became visibly concerned at the proposed new city zoning map and ordinances when an “adult entertainment district” was mentioned at the city council meeting Monday.
William Peacock, with the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District, provided a detailed overview of the city’s proposed zoning map during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Monday afternoon.
“I haven’t made a lot of changes in the existing zoning,” Peacock said. “(Changes were made) because it is over 25 years old, and you needed to update your ordinances.”
Peacock said there are several new zoning districts, including residential estate, medium residential and historical commercial. But some audience members began to shift in their seats when they heard about an adult entertainment district.
“This is not advocating for adult entertainment,” Peacock said. “This is to provide a mechanism to control such a business in case one wanted to locate in town.”
