Tornado-damaged 49 Junction is coming back better than before
By JASON PATTERSON
On the afternoon of April 24 A.G. Helton was just hoping he could get his septic tank fixed before it rained.
“I was outside working on it when we heard the sirens,” Helton said.
Severe weather was in the forecast, but no one could have predicted what was in store for Yazoo City. Helton and his family were safe at home, but the 49 Junction owner soon learned that his Yazoo shopping center was directly in the path of the tornado that killed four Yazoo County residents and destroyed many homes and businesses.
“Tim Peeples called and said it hit 49 Junction hard,” Helton said. “That was my worst nightmare because this building is very special to me.”
When Helton arrived at 49 Junction he was shocked. The north end of the building suffered heavy damage. Much of the southern end was reduced to rubble. Police officers were trying to maintain order amidst the chaos.
