Moonshine still busted near Big Mound
By JASON PATTERSON
The hike through the woods was just a few hundred yards, but it felt like a journey back in time.
Busting up moonshine stills regularly made headlines in Yazoo County 60 and 70 years ago, but it’s so rare these days that Sheriff Thomas Vaughan can’t remember a case involving a major still in his 18-year career in law enforcement.
With cheap whiskey readily available and legal, the moonshine trade has largely gone the way of prohibition. But on Saturday Vaughan and his officers uncovered one of the largest stills in Yazoo County history. Over 200 gallons of white lightning were found at the still located in dense woods off of Big Mound Road near Bentonia.
