Friday night preview - Aug, 27

Tonight can be looked at as the season opener once again for Yazoo County schools, each team going winless last week at home.

Yazoo City will have the only home game when they host Humphreys County at 7:30. The Indians are coming off a nail biter in a 26-20 loss Wingfield that went down to the final play of the game, a catch on the goal line that could have gone either way. Dazmon Wright had three touchdowns on the night and 155 yards passing in his debut. The Cowboys are coming off a 24-6 loss to Coahoma County.

Benton Academy showed some bright spots on defense, but missed several opportunities to cash in on great field position which led to a 26-7 loss to University Christian. T.C. Saxton recorded 95 yards on the ground for Benton, but Bo Dickerson stole the show on defense with 16 tackles, 12 unassisted. The Raiders travel to Canton who is also looking for their first win on the year.

Yazoo County will need to be error free if they want to on the road at Kosciusko tonight. The Panthers committed eight turnovers in last week’s 47-6 loss to MRA. The game was close in the first quarter before the Patriots scored 17 points in a minute and rallied for the win. The Whippets will be looking to avenge a 14-0 loss at the claws of the Panthers in 2009.

Manchester Academy left it all on the field last week against Tri-County. Matt Peaster had a good outing under center and the receiving core is showing promise.  Veteran head coach Benny McLendon knows how to win; it won’t be long before the Mavericks will be back and competing for a district title. They travel to Indianola where the Colonels are 1-0 following a win over Lee Academy.
