A century in Bentonia

Sporting her beloved Atlanta Braves hat, Caroline Fields Griffin looks back on life at age 100 with her grandson Raymond Fuqua Sr.Sporting her beloved Atlanta Braves hat, Caroline Fields Griffin looks back on life at age 100 with her grandson Raymond Fuqua Sr.By JAMIE PATTERSON

Mrs. Caroline Fields Griffin has the secret of longevity that she has stuck to for 100 years.
Stay close to home. Mind your own business. Eat healthy food. And take care of your family.
It must be sound advice because the Bentonia native celebrated her 100th birthday on Aug. 10.
“I am so thankful that I have made it this far,” Mrs. Griffin  said.
Mrs. Griffin has lived through the Great Depression, two world wars, 18 presidents and many other significant historical events.
But when the soft-spoken lady talks about her many years, she always refers to her hometown of Bentonia. Yazoo County has been her home since birth, and she has no plans of leaving it.
“I was born here in this house,” Mrs. Griffin said, pointing to the living room floor. “I was raised here and have been right here for 100 years.”
Inside the small house, Mrs. Griffin and her 15 brothers and sisters were raised by their hard-working, farmer parents.

“All my brothers and sisters have passed,” she said.
