As the sun began to set on the town of Bentonia a pair of airplanes flew across the sky above, their intersecting vapor trails forming the image of a cross.
Many in the crowd of around 200 present for the lighting of the cross ceremony Saturday viewed it as a sign that God approved of their efforts.
And when darkness finally arrived, those gathered were delighted to see the crosses light up and shine down on the town.
The new lighted crosses on the tower above the W.S. “Red” Hancock offices on U.S. 49 are the result of private fundraising efforts. Those efforts began after Bentonia was forced to remove crosses from the town’s publicly-owned water tower following threats of litigation from the American Civil Liberties Union.
