Internet phone users off the hook for E911 tax

By JASON PATTERSON
Managing Editor

Internet telephone service users in Yazoo County won’t have to pay – at least for now – a $1 tax that would support E911 services.
The Yazoo County Board of Supervisors tabled a request from Civil Defense Director Bernice McGinnis to enact the fee Monday. Internet telephone users are currently off the hook for the fee that land line and cellular phone users are already paying.
“It’s not a good time to be talking about taxes,” said Board President Cobie Collins.
Over 20 counties in Mississippi have added the $1 tax to Internet phone service users since Gov. Haley Barbour signed a law in May establishing the fee, which is capped at $1 per month.
