It will go down as one of the most memorable games in the rivalry’s storied history.
Midway through the third quarter the Tri-County Academy Rebels found themselves in unfamiliar territory.
Their opponent was driving toward the endzone and threatening to take the lead. But the Rebels held Benton to a field goal, and built on their lead to capture the North Half title with a 26-10 victory.
There was no shortage of motivation for either side.
Benton Academy was seeking to avenge a regular season loss, and pull off an upset to earn a spot in the state championship game.
Tri-County was looking to improve to 13-0 and secure the opportunity to defend its state title.
The game lived up to its billing with the outcome unclear until the final stanza, but in the end Tri-County pushed on to a decisive victory.
“We had our chances,” said Raiders head coach Wayman Grantham. “We played well, but we came up short. I was very proud of our effort.”
