Gervarious Nelson had the best seat in the house for Yazoo County’s first round playoff victory over North Pontotoc.
But no one ever dreamed he would be seated for this game. The senior tight end’s crushing blocks were a critical factor in helping the Panthers make it this far.
Nelson was forced to watch from his wheelchair on the sideline Friday as his teammates chalked up another win.
He suffered a broken leg late in the fourth quarter of the district title game a week earlier. Nelson knew right away that his season was over.
“Three guys fell on my leg,” he said. “I knew it was serious.”
Nelson has been a leader on the field all season long, but his coaches and teammates have taken even more inspiration from his attitude since he has been forced off the field by injury. Instead of feeling sorry for himself Nelson has remained positive and continued to support his teammates.
On Friday night Nelson was very vocal from the sidelines, offering support and advice for the guys on the field.
“I would rather have been out there, but I wasn’t frustrated at all because I knew they were going to take care of business on the field,” Nelson said. “It has been great to be a part of this team. They are my family.”
