The Yazoo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will honor all Yazoo area Girl Scouts on their 100th anniversary. The event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Triangle Cultural Center across from the Yazoo City Post Office. A reception will follow for the Girl Scouts, the troop leaders, their parents and all former Girl Scouts.
2012 is called the “Year of the Girl” by the Girl Scouts of the USA. The following troops and their leaders will be recognized: Troop # 5064, Troop # 5362, Troop # 5442, Troop # 5462, Troop # 5479, Troop # 5488 and Troop # 5497. These troops have a combined total of over 80 very capable, eager members who will prove “when girls succeed, so does society.”
The Girl Scouts of the USA was started by Julie “Daisy” Gordon Lowe on March 12, 1912. She assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Ga. for the first Girl Scout meeting. Within a few years, Daisy’s dream for a girl centered organization was realized. Today, the Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of 2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adults working as volunteers. This is the largest educational organization for girls in the world. There are more than 59 million women in the United States today who are Girl Scout alumnae.
Girl Scouts build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. The Girl Scout Promise: “On my honor, I will try: to serve God and my country, help people all the time, and to live by the Girl Scout law.” The Girl Scout Law: “I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place and to be a sister to every Girl Scout.”
Yazoo Chapter NSDAR looks forward to welcoming the present day Girl Scouts and troop leaders, their parents and all former Girl Scouts on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Triangle to celebrate this 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA. There will be a few tables to display present day or former Girl Scout memorabilia if members and alumnae would like to bring such items or pictures.
