FLOWOOD – The Benton Academy softball team started off their bid for a state title on Saturday about as well as they could have hoped for.
The Lady Raiders defeated  Veritas School in the first game in tournament play 8-1. Benton Academy and top-seeded Bayou Academy will resume their game from Saturday afternoon today with the two teams knotted 5-5 in the sixth inning after heavy downpour in the Jackson area forced tournament officials to postpone until later in the week.
“We’re playing the best softball we have all year,” Benton Academy coach Vince Davis said. “All year, our hitting has been (inconsistent) but against Veritas we finally started getting bunts down and putting the ball in play.”
