Campbell has game-winning interception

By JOFFRE WASHINGTON
For the Herald

Yazoo City head coach Tony Woolfolk knew one thing was certain heading into last week’s contest with the Canton Tigers. One team was going to snap a three-game losing streak by game’s end. Thanks in large part to a dominant defensive performance, the Indians were able to pull out a 6-0 win and improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play.
In what has affectionately become known as the Battle of the Big Black River (by Canton P.A. announcer Melvin Gillum), the Indians forced four Tiger turnovers to propel themselves to victory.
“Our defense has rolled for us all year long,” said Indian head coach Tony Woolfolk. “That’s our strong point. Guys are getting to the ball and making things happen. We needed a game like this.”
Indeed they did. After winning their first two games, the Indians had dropped their last three on the road, the most recent, a district loss to Neshoba Central. A loss to Canton would have almost surely erased any playoff hopes the Indians had.
