City schools may increase taxes again

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

The Yazoo City School District is considering requesting a 4.75 millage tax increase in a budget hearing that will be held in two weeks.
The meeting between the city school board and the Mayor and Board of Aldermen will be held on July 30 at 1 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
Many city officials are predicting a tax increase with the anticipation of the school board’s request that was similar to last year’s budget.
Last year, school officials requested a 4.75 millage increase. That same request could be made during the budget hearing this month, which will mean more money from the taxpayers.
The millage rate could increase from 48.19 to 52.94 if the 4.75 millage increase occurs.
“If the schools come back with that request, the city council will have to accept it,” said Mayor McArthur Straughter.
