County schools oppose refuge expansion

By VERNON SIKES
Herald Correspondent

If the U.S. Congress is successful in their efforts in acquiring up to 48,000 acres of privately held land in Yazoo County, the results could be devastating, according to the Yazoo County School District trustees.
“They're planning to take – that's the best word for it because they're going to pay (the land owners) whatever they want to pay them – 48,000 acres,” said Assistant Superintendent Mickey Rivers. “It's going to start at the Whittington Channel here on the west levee, and it's going to encompass everything through Broad Lake, it's going to take Simmons Catfish Farm, it's going to come on across and get all those homes. We've got three 16th Sections in that and it's my understanding that they take those, too.”
