County can’t clean up our messes

Jason PattersonJason PattersonIt’s been awhile, but I’ve probably dedicated more ink on this page to criticizing garbage collection in Yazoo County than any other topic. I even fired off a couple of letters to the editor on the subject long before I ever dreamed I would one day occupy the editor’s chair at The Herald.
I’m surprised none of our county officials have criticized me for not exerting a little more effort to acknowledge how much garbage collection has improved since the county took over the operation. I would have to accept that as valid criticism.
Garbage collection in the county has improved considerably since county officials gave up on a pitifully inept private contractor and instituted a county-operated system.
It still isn’t perfect, and something as dirty as garbage collection never will be, but there has been vast improvement. With the added advantage of saving money, there could even be more room for improvement in the future.
