Yazoo native named Marine of the Year

Trevor M. JohnsonTrevor M. JohnsonBy JASON PATTERSON
Editor & Publisher

Trevor M. Johnson wanted a challenge in life, and the recruiters told him that the U.S. Marines Corps would be the greatest challenge he could find.
That was all Johnson needed to hear to make the decision to enlist, and he has been on a successful path ever since. Johnson recently earned a tremendous honor by being named Marine of the Year.
Johnson is a graduate of Yazoo City High School, where he was a standout on the Indians football team. He credits his parents, Tommy and Nekather Johnson Irvine, for giving him the discipline to succeed in life.
“My parents are awesome,” he said. “They have been there for me from day one. When I was younger I thought they were too strict, but now I realize that they were doing what was best for me. I am thankful for that.”
Johnson left Yazoo on Aug. 23, 2010 for boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. His leadership qualities were quickly recognized, and Johnson was selected as a platoon leader for over 70 recruits.
