Statesmen fall at CWS
By TAYLOR MITCHELL
CARY, N.C. – After winning their first two games of the College World Series, the Delta State Statesmen fell victim to Minnesota State Mankato 1-0. However, it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities by the Statesmen.
Delta State (48-14) had runners in scoring position several times Thursday afternoon, but no wasted opportunity hurt more than the one in the top of the eighth.
Needing just one run to extend the game, the Statesmen put runners on first and third with just one out in the inning. Mavericks’ starter Tyler Ockuly met with his teammates on the mound as Michael Vinson walked to the plate. On the first pitch, Vinson hit a ground ball straight to the second baseman, who flipped the ball to the covering short stop at second before throwing the ball to first base, where Vinson was called out after appearing safe.
Vinson, a junior from Southaven, threw his helmet on the ground in anger and was ejected from the game. Replays, however, appear to show Vinson stepping on first base just moments before the ball reached first base.
