Two city leaders stood alone this week in their desire to reach an agreement with county supervisors involving a communication system.
Mayor McArthur Straughter and Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. were the only two board members who voted to pay the county $13,750 a month for the E-911 communication system and remain in the interlocal agreement.
Aldermen Dr. Jack Varner, Charles “Mickey” O’Reilly and Clifton Jones opposed the unofficial offer during the latest city board meeting.
During the city’s previous meeting, the board drafted a letter to be sent to Board of Supervisors that stated they would pay $10,000 a month to the E-911 system instead of the regular $15,000 payment. If the county rejected that offer, the city would terminate its contract and form its own communication system.
