CARY, N.C. – Michael Vinson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including the game winners, for No. 2 Delta State University, as the Statesmen (47-13) defeated the No. 1 Rattlers (48-10) of St. Mary's University 4-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II College World Series Sunday, May 27 at Coleman Field on the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
In a game that featured swings in momentum, the Rattlers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Mario Maldonado scored on a perfectly executed squeeze play Derek Moczygemba.
The Statesmen battled back in the fourth, as Michael Vinson's RBI single to center scored Ben Kingsley, who singled and swiped second, to tie the game at 1-1.
The fifth inning and the top of the sixth went quickly before Mother Nature reared her head in the bottom of the sixth, causing an hour rain delay.
After the rain delay, DSU got a leadoff single by Tyler Aldridge in the seventh, but couldn't scratch anything across.
