When the flood forced Hines Grocery to close its doors last summer, a lot of people in the community took the news like there had been a death in the family.
The folks at the store seemed like family to many, and its owners felt the same way about their customers.
“Some of these farmers are like my kids,” said Eva Hines, who opened the store with her husband John in 1985. “We fed them every day.”
In addition to serving the community near the lake, Hines Grocery has long enjoyed a devoted following throughout the region for its good food, especially their pork sausage.
But John and Eva Hines had been considering retirement for awhile, and when the flood came it made the decision for them. After the water receded, they placed the store up for sale. It sat on the market for about a year with no buyer.
