With the flames gone and the smoke smell lingering in the air, the skeleton of the Federal Compress serves as a haunting reminder of Yazoo’s fire history.
An icon of a past era now lies in ruins after a fire engulfed the former compress on Water Street late Tuesday night. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it is still a sad sight for many Yazooans who remember the warehouse during its heyday.
“I remember being awestruck at its size,” Lesley Taggart said. As a kid it was huge on the inside to me.”
