Levee decertification would be costly

Local officials fear that the proposed decertification of Yazoo County’s levees could result in costs that are more than many property owners can afford.
On Sept. 30 the Federal Emergency Management Agency is expected to decertify the levees in Yazoo County along with many levees throughout the Delta. If this happens, many homeowners may be forced to purchase flood insurance who previously were considered protected.
“It’s my understanding that everyone west of the railroad tracks in Yazoo will have to buy flood insurance,” said Cobie Collins, president of the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors. “That will likely be more than many of our residents can afford. We had no idea this was coming.”
