CONNIE BANKS
Connie Mae Miller Banks, 52, died February 28, 2012.
Funeral services were Monday at Chapel Hill M.B. Church with Rev. Johnny Dodd officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Banks was born March 9, 1959 in Yazoo City to Laura Miller Kyles and Charles Kyles. She was a member of Chapel Hill M.B. Church.
Survivors include her husband of nine years, John Albert Banks; three children, Marquita Miller, Jessica Miller and John Miller, all of Yazoo City; four stepchildren, Turkesha Washington and Albert Banks of Yazoo City, Tonya Banks of Hebron, Indiana and LaKendrick Billingsly of Belzoni; four sisters, Sharon Miller Cathey (Monroe), Patricia McIntyer, and Murian Sheppard and Charlene McIntyer (Jeffrey), all of Yazoo City; six brothers, John Miller of Yazoo City, Romeo Miller of Canton, Eddie Wilson and Willie Miller of Chicago, Lee Sheppard of Yazoo City and Kevell McIntyer of Yazoo City; 11 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Floyd Banks, Walter Banks, Allen McIntyer, Percy McIntyer, Cortney McIntyer and Freddie Cooper.
Honorary pallbearers were Darrius McIntyer, Willie Miller, Eddie Wilson, John Miller, Rerell McIntyer, Albert Banks and Jeffery Whisenton.

ALEX DIXON

Alex Javon Dixon, 30, died February 25, 2012.
Funeral services were Saturday at Wilson Grove M.B. Church in Flora with Rev. Roosevelt Barrett officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Dixon was born Dec. 17, 1981 in Hinds County to Jim Dixon Jr. and Nellie Dixon. He was employed with the Madison County Road Department and was a member of Wilson Grove M.B. Church.
Survivors include his wife, Tanya Dixon of Bentonia; two sons, Jordan Dixon of Ridgeland and Alex Dixon Jr. of Bentonia; parents, Rev. Jim and Nellie Dixon Jr. of Vaughan; seven sisters, Rena McWade (Harold), and Sandra Jones (Leroy) of Jackson; Stephanie Dixon, Michelle Bacon, Catina Ingram (Mariam) and Deborah Dixon, all of Flora, and Kendra Dixon of Vaughan; five brothers, Rev. Stanley Dixon (Cynthia) of Clinton, Jim Dixon (Tonisha) of Forth Worth, Texas and Clifton Dixon (Sharon), Truman Dixon and Calvin Rosell, all of Jackson; mother-in-law, Mary Hubbard of Bentonia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were his nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were Marcus Lewis, Rev. Pernell Gibbs, Kenyatte Hopkins, Richard Denson Jr., Aaron Brown and Shaundell Bracey.

WILLIE FORD
Willie B. Ford, 49, died February 25, 2012.
Funeral services were Saturday at Holiness Pentecostal Church in Tchula with Bishop J.L. Payne officiating. Burial followed at West Shady Grove M.B. Church Cemetery in Lexington under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Ms. Ford was born July 28, 1962 to John and Irene Hughes Ford. She attended S.V. Marshall High School and was a member of Holiness Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Shanda Denise Roberson (Greg) of Tchula; a son, Dexter Lyndall Ford of Tchula; two sisters, Elmira Hubbard (Martines) of Dallas, Texas and Glenda Wilson (Peter) of Tchula; brother, Earnest Ford of Tchula; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were James E. Baker, Tony Ford, Kelvin Greer, Eddie Jenkins, Alvin Greer and James Campbell.
Honorary pallbearers were Dyrus Jenkins, Earnest Ford, Cedric Jenkins, Terry Jenkins, Jeff Jackson and Larry Clay.

R.V. GREY
R.V. Grey, 88, of Redwood, died Saturday, March 3, 2012 at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg.
Funeral services were Monday at the Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel in Vicksburg. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Grey was born in Holly Bluff to Bennitt and Etha Lowery Grey and lived in Vicksburg for the past 33 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. He was the owner and operator of R.V. Grey Mobile Homes in Vicksburg since 1972.
Survivors include his wife, Fairy Lowry Grey of Redwood; two sons, Wayne Dolan Gray of New Berry, Fla. and Rexton Van Grey of Redwood; two daughters, Vickie Peltz of Vicksburg and Dixie Anne Redditt of Vicksburg; two brothers, Billy Ray Grey of Pearl and George Grey of Vicksburg and grandchildren, Jeffrey Peltz, Stephanie Paxton, Randy Holder, Rachel Redditt, Garrett Grey, Rexton Grey, Justin Grey and Ryan Grey.

ANNIE PEARSON-BEVERLY
Annie Laura Perason-Beverly, 60, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012.
Funeral services were Feb. 24 at Pauline Minor Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth Texas.
Mrs. Pearson was born July 11, 1951 in Yazoo City to Josie Lee Fatheree Murphy and Raymond Daniel Pearson. She was a 1969 graduate of N.D. Taylor High School. She moved to Chicago and graduated from Nancy Taylor Business Career School with honors. She worked with Sears Corporate offices, Proline Black Hair Care, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters and at Harris Methodist Hospital over the course of her career.
Survivors include her children, Joseph D. Mitchell, Carla M. Pearson and April D. Mitchell; stepson, Anthony Reeves; stepmother, Winnie Pearson; sisters, Jewel Pearson, Joyce Rutledge (Joseph), Bobbie Pearson, Rose Anderson (Sylvester), Lula Carrol (Ray), Debra Outlaw, Renee Pearson, Cheryl Garfield, Janet Harris (Rick), and Angela Berry (Don); brothers, Eric Murphy (Sallee), Will Dent and Raymond Pearson; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Joseph Mitchell, Dexter House, Anthony Reeves, Fronze Pearson, Devon House, Eric Murphy, Joseph Rutledge, Reginald Pearson, Raymond Pearson and Sylvester Anderson.

 
Letters to the editor

Dear Editor,
I realize after this letter is published that my daughter will probably never have the opportunity of making the Dixie League All-Star team.  
However after praying and pondering over this situation, and because she has never made the team in all of her five years of playing (which is a joke) I have nothing to lose.  
I am normally a pretty passive person, but I guess the older I get the more I see and understand the cruel shenanigans that many of our kids are faced with.  But mostly, the older I get the more I have learned to become more vocal in the things I feel are just not right.  
The Dixie Youth Girls Team is one that I have held close to my heart because the one child that I have has been a part of this league since she was old enough to participate.  Now at first I did not make a big issue out of the All Star Selection process because each year I was given a so-called excuse as to why my child did not make it.  
Her first year and at age four, she was just this cute little girl scrambling around like the others with no clue as to what to do.  As she got older and more serious, I realized that this is really becoming her passion and not tooting my own horn but she’s pretty darn good.
Now again I know that she may never make the team after the comment I am about to make, but who cares.
This league is one of the most biased leagues I have ever, ever encountered. Parents, many of our kids are being overlooked because the selection process is too political and a big joke.  I do not think that I could sleep at night knowing that I (the coaches) put my child in a position that I know they do not deserve.  
For years and in talking to other parents, coaches have been allowed to nominate their child(ren) and other coaches’ children, which is so unfair.   Now I know that I am not the smartest person in the world, but I do know what ALL-STAR means. But for those of you who do not, it means “consisting of athletes chosen as the best at their positions from all ... consisting entirely of star performers.” To break it down further; the BEST players!!!
We as parents need to be more involved in ensuring that there are policies and procedures in place and that they are adhered to.  We want the best children to represent our city not those children that you want to be recognized to feed your own egos.  
Coaches should not be allowed to nominate their children or make deals behind closed doors.  ALL-STAR selections should be based on statistics and privy to those children who have worked hard and diligently all summer. Some of you coaches should be ashamed of yourselves with your hidden agendas. I personally do not see how you sleep at night.
