JOHN HARDY
John Earl Hardy, 75, of Yazoo City, died Feb. 8, 2012 at the Swan Pointe Care Center in Maumee, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Feb. 16 at Third Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio with Rev. Kevin Bedford officiating.
Mr. Hardy was born on Dec. 5, 1936 in Yazoo City to Harry and Annie Hardy. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Ruth and Dallas Johnson.
He grew up in Yazoo City and married Ida Mae Young before entering the U.S. Air Force. They had five children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; uncle and aunt; brothers, Charles and George Hardy; and daughter, Bernadine Hardy.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ida Mae; sons, Michael E. Hardy (Phyllis) of Toledo and Dallas Hardy (Tammy) of Yazoo City; daughters, Harriet Hardy (Jerry) of Toledo and Kimberly Tate (Harold) of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother, Leroy Hardy of Toledo; sister, Annie Ruth Stiff (Thomas) of Yazoo City; and a host of family and friends.

SADIE McFARLAND
Sadie McFarland, 81, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Funeral services were Monday at Bethlehem Cemetery. Burial followed under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. McFarland was born Jan. 14, 1931 to Columbus O. Harber Sr. and Maebell Flanagan Harber. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee McFarland.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Saxton; four sons, David Smith, Marvin Smith, Dwayne Smith and Wayne Smith; three brothers, Sidney Harber and Talmon Harber; four sisters, Minnie Fuller, Joy Cleveland, Eva Martin and Margaret Bright; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

JERVIA POWELL
Jervia M. Powell, son of James and Lourdes Sendin Powell, died Saturday, February 25,  after a bout with cancer on his 37th birthday at the home of his parents in Benton.
Funeral services are tentatively set for Saturday, March 3 at Yazoo City High School with burial in Glenwood Cemetery.  Shaffer and Collins Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Having served for six years with an honorable discharge in the United States Navy, Officer Powell served as a patrolman with Jackson Police Department at the time of his passing.
Preceded in passing by both his maternal and paternal grandparents and several aunts and uncles, he is survived, along with his parents,  by five daughters - Ariel Powell, Jervia Mia Powell and Daryn Araya Powell of Yazoo City and Jerbrea Maria Powell and London Lorraine Powell of Byram; one sister, Nichole Powell McBride of Fort Meade, MD and James "Boom" Powell, Jr. of Odenton, MD.  Other local survivors include paternal uncles/aunt,  Fred Owens, Cleveland Owens and Gloria Elayne Owens of Yazoo City.  He is also survived by maternal uncles in the Phillipines and paternal aunts/uncles in Detroit and Atlanta and a host of other relatives and friends.

MARVIN ROLLINS
Marvin Houston Rollins, 60, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012.
Funeral services were Feb. 24 at Glenwood Cemetery with Father Lincoln Dall officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Rollins was born Oct. 16, 1951 to Maggie Mae Rollins and the late Robert C. “Bob” O’Reilly. He was educated at St. Francis Catholic School, where he served as an alter boy, and graduated from N.D. Taylor High School in 1969.
He studied mathematics at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri before joining the U.S. Air Force. He later worked as a self-employed carpenter for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Valeria Glenn; mother, Maggie M. Rollins; daughters, Shawana Johnson Sanders (Charles) of Dallas, Texas, Kimberly J. of Birmingham, Ala. and Marcia G. Collins (Corey) of Madison; son, Marvin Craig of Shiloh, Ill.; sister, Patricia Williams (Louis) of Yazoo City; grandchildren, Je’Marian Marquis, Jordan Kennedy, Sydney Claire and Mariya Danielle; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Marvin Craig Rollins, Gabriel Williams, Rodney Williams and  Louis Williams Jr.

PATRICIA THOMPSON
Patricia Kay Thompson, 73, of Oxford, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Funeral services were Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father George Woodliff officiating. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thompson was born March 19, 1938 in Benton, Ky. to Lynell and Mahayla Boyd Stevens. She graduated from Yazoo City High School in May, 1956. She graduated from the University of Mississippi and was a member of the Chi Omega sorority while there.  Mrs. Thompson, a former school teacher, was also active in Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Peters Episcopal Church in Oxford.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Bea Holmes and Lynvell Stevens; step-father John Holmes; and brothers, Larry Lynvell Stevens and James Garrott Holmes.
Survivors include her daughter, Kay Creekmore of Akron, Ohio; a sister, Belinda Stevens of Brandon; a son, Taft Ferguson of Gulfport; and two grandchildren, Mitchell Creekmore and Alex Creekmore.
Serving as pallbearers were B. Barrier, Swayze Alford, Miller Holmes Jr., Buford Atkinson, Robert J. Bailey and Camp King.

MINNIE BENNETT
Minnie Halford Bennett, 92, of Yazoo City, died on Feb. 25, 2012 at the Martha Coker Green Houses.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Lynch officiating. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Bennett was born on April 23, 1919 in Yazoo County to W.J. Halford and Minnie Downs. She was a Baptist and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Paul Bennett.
Survivors include her nieces Pat Evans (Fred) of Pensacola, Fla. and Ruth Lott (Berry) of Starkville; and nephew, Barry Halford (Carolyn) of Hartselle, Ala.

JOYCE HUGHES
Joyce Woods Hughes, 75, of Pearl, died on Feb. 26, 2012 at her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Scotland Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Cresswell, Rev. Danny Cresswell and Dr. Earl Reyer officiating. Burial followed at Scotland Baptist Church Cemetery in Yazoo County under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hughes was born on Dec. 13, 1936 in Attala County to Joe Woods and Effie McCrory. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Earl Hughes.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Hughes (Cristy) of Florence and Jeffery Hughes of Richland; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Ann Cresswell and Janice Adams, both of Bentonia and Beverly Whitehead of Florence; and brother, Clyde Seawright of Bentonia.
Pallbearers were W. D. Mayes, Steve Seawright, Joe Woods, Roger Cresswell, Robert Hughes Jr., Mike Hughes and Dennis Reyer.
