In the neighborhood where he played to songs that made him famous, a Mississippi Blues Trail marker was dedicated in honor of Tommy McClennan Thursday.
“He frequently played his music right in this area,” said Yazoo County CVB Director Tonja Ray-Smith, noting that the Hill’s Lumber building across the street was once a theater where McClennan often performed.
McClennan was one of the most successful blues artists of his era when he recorded 20 singles for the Bluebird label from 1939-42. The Yazoo native is best remembered for songs like “Bottle It Up and Go,” “Cross Cut Saw” and “Travelin’ Highway Man.”
