Headed into the Friday night slate of games, the best team in 5A according to The Clarion Ledger rankings was Starkville. After Friday night, though, there was a need for a new number one as the Indians of Yazoo City knocked off Starkville 50-47.
Ladarius Drain hit two free throws in the final moments Friday night that tied the game at 47-47. After a quick score by the Indians, Jalen Grayer was sent to the charity stripe for a chance to put the game out of reach of Starkville.
Grayer made his first free throw but missed his second that gave Yazoo City a 50-47 lead.
Starkville had a chance at tying the in the final seconds but missed the shot as the buzzer sounded, allowing the Indians to return to Yazoo City with a 50-47 lead.
While Yazoo City found a way to win in Starkville, the Indians needed more late game magic three days later at the Lanier High School MLK Classic on Monday.
Headed into the fourth quarter, the Indians led Wingfield 44-39 after exchanging leads throughout the first three quarters. Yazoo City managed to extend its lead after neither squad scored a basket in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter with four points.
Wingfield battled back as the game drew to a close, closing the gap to 50-49 with a minute and a half to play.
