Officials seek to save failing city high school

By JAMIE PATTERSON

State officials discussed how to resolve several issues at Yazoo City High School before it’s too late.
Representatives from the Mississippi Department of Education presented their findings from a study at the local high school during the municipal school board meeting last week.
During that same meeting, state officials also shared their suggestions of how to get the school back on the right track.
Dr. Laura Jones, with the state department of education, said Yazoo City High School is listed as a “failing” school. If the school remains at that level, a charter conversion law or new start school law could apply for the school’s future.
“We’re not looking to take you over,” Jones said. “We are looking at withdrawing the district’s accreditation. That is seriously being considered.”
With Yazoo High being a failing school, the current conditions among its students, teachers and curriculum were discussed during the latest meeting.
Officials agreed that the key to the high school’s success will be cooperation, communication and unity between school administration, staff, parents and the community.
