City leaders submit resolution denying voter identification

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

City leaders passed a resolution this week denying the voter identification law.
There was no opposition  with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its open meeting Monday afternoon when the push to reject voter identification was approved.
Mayor McArthur Straughter sparked the discussion among board members. He said the elderly should be taken into account with the law.
“If it’s like other states when one has to have a birth certificate to get an identification, a lot of the elderly won’t be able to do that,” Straughter said.
Initiative No. 27, the voter identification law, was passed by Mississippi voters last November. The initiative requires citizens to present government issued photo identification before casting a vote at the polls or at the circuit clerk’s office by absentee ballot. -------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------
