Oakes Center raises funds through cantata

The Oakes African-American Cultural Center recently held its fundraiser Christmas Cantata, Behold Emmanuel, Love is With Us. The Oakes African-American Cultural Center recently held its fundraiser Christmas Cantata, Behold Emmanuel, Love is With Us. Special to The Herald

Recently the Triangle Cultural Center was the setting for a Christmas Cantata, Behold Emmanuel, Love is With Us.
Choir members from Yazoo County churches, under the direction of Edwina Gordon Fox, performed a medley of Christmas carols. This was the fourth year that the Oakes African-American Cultural Center sponsored the beautiful musical celebration welcoming in the Christmas season.
Performers were dressed in seasonal attire and displayed warm welcoming smiles in anticipation of Christmas.
There were choral arrangements, solos and group instrumental presentations that allowed the audience to relax and enjoy this most precious of all seasons.
Members of the audience applauded the various performances and were treated to refreshments that included punch, cookies and warm apple cider following the program.
Even though this year’s program was well attended, extra seating was available.
The Oakes Planning Committee is looking forward to next year’s Christmas Cantata and anticipating a capacity crowd. The planning committee wishes to thank the various churches, groups and individuals that participated in this year’s program.
A special thanks goes out to the Triangle Cultural Center for hosting this year’s fund raising event for the Oakes African-American Cultural Center.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor:
In the 6 April 2013 edition of The Yazoo Herald you published a letter from Cynthia Fuller, "Thanks to (Van) Foster for helping get bridge replaced."
After reading this lettter, I had the impression that the bridge was completed and traffic was moving along normally.
Wrong!  Last Sunday I was on my way to homecoming at Providence Baptist Church.  I turned north onto old 49 and saw the signs that the bridge was out.  I assumed that they hadn't gotten around to removing the signs.  I expected to cross Thompson Creek on the new bridge.  When I approached the creek the road was barricaded and construction equipment was down in the creek.
Perhaps The Herald can keep us updated as to the progress being made on the new bridge.
