The phone keeps ringing at Bentonia City Hall.
People are calling to find out why the crosses weren’t lit last night or making sure city officials know there’s a problem.
They know all too well.
Bentonia was forced to pull the plug on the crosses that have shined down on the town from the city’s water tower for years after the American Civil Liberties Union threatened a lawsuit.
Police Chief Edward “Tra” Ferrell said the town recently received notice that a resident was offended by the crosses and a lawsuit would be forthcoming if they were not removed.
