Rep. Philip Gunn, whose district includes Yazoo County, was selected Tuesday to serve as House speaker for the new session.
Gunn will be the first Republican to hold the position since Reconstruction.
Gunn, who has served in the House since 2004, was unopposed for the post that has been held by Democrats for decades.
