For a second straight year a natural disaster was the top story in Yazoo County.
The effects of the flood of 2011 will be felt in Yazoo County for years to come. The flood destroyed homes and crops in areas that had previously been protected from flooding. Many Yazooans are still working to put their lives back together.
Yazoo made significant strides in recovering from the 2010 tornadoes. Peter’s Chapel reopened in September, and Hillcrest Baptist Church opened the doors to its new church building in November.
Yazoo suffered yet another storm-related tragedy when county employee Harold Coker, who suffered much loss in the April 2010 tornado, was killed in April while helping clear debris from a storm.
On a more uplifting note, Yazoo City’s 7-Year-Old Dixie Youth All-Stars team made their hometown proud by winning the first State Title for Yazoo since 1967. Connor Counts, A.J. Saxton, Parks Poe, Tyler Johnson, Connor Stevens, Ashton Saxton, Greyson Winstead, Wil Saxton, Jon Riley Poe, Mills Paul, Landon Lowery and J.B. Middleton captured a permanent place in Yazoo sports history.

William Carroll and Jimmy Chisolm both marked 50 years of working in downtown Yazoo City.
It was five decades ago in June when Carroll joined the firm that his father-in-law Clifton Livingston founded in Yazoo City in 1923. He continues to manage the successful firm with his son, Kip Carroll.
