As the Lady Indian basketball squad wraps up their practice, the boys basketball team is already dressed in the practice gear and watching the final moments of a defensive drill about how to defend two particular players.
There is small talk among the Indians and most of it brings out smiles and laughs among the teammates. It’s the same way on the court, too.
“Off the court we hang out a lot,” senior Corey Cox said. “On the court we clap each other up. In games we pick each other up and it’s the same thing in practice.”
The team chemistry, as well as the talent and experience possessed by Yazoo City is the reason the Indians are off to one of their best starts in years.
“I didn’t think we would be 6-2,” head coach Archie Carlyle said. “But I thought we should be pretty good because of the experience.”
“It feels good to start like this because the last two years we were kind of bad,” senior Johnny Rucker said. “Coach told me two weeks ago, we did good starting 5-1. This is what I expected.”
After one month of play the only teams to beat Yazoo City are Provine and Callaway, two of the best teams in Mississippi. Even those two losses were close by basketball standards. Both Provine and Callaway won by 11 points.
