Marion F. “Sonny” Baskin, a leader in agriculture and civic affairs, died Sunday at age 77 of leukemia.
Visitation will be Thursday from 9-11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Funeral services will follow with Rev. George Woodliff officiating.
Baskin was recognized as both a leader in agriculture and an ambassador to farming in Yazoo County. During 35 years of farming, he was featured in several farm publications. In 1979 he was the winner of Cotton Grower Magazine’s Cotton Achievement Award, which is awarded annually to only one cotton farmer in the entire cotton belt.
In 1984 Baskin was named the first Mississippi Farmer of the Year by Mississippi Network. That year his cotton crop yielded over three bales an acre.
