It seems as if the story of Georgina Barrett Devlin was meant to be published.
The long-time Yazoo resident began keeping a journal in 1852. Kept in spiral-bound composition notebooks, Georgina consistently wrote her story for six decades.
Her accounts cover everything from Southern history to Civil War memories to moments in small town life. The diary is a testament of her life, mingled with the development of Yazoo.
Her descendent Katharine Jones discovered Georgina’s story in the 1950s. Years and tons of research later, she has published Georgina’s story, The Diary of a Southern Lady.
“I was given the bound volume of the diary by my grandmother, Georgie Gilruth Mounger, the granddaughter of the first Georgina, the author of the diary,” Jones said. “While still in high school, I began the transcription.”  -------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------
