The Thelma and Louise mentality

Walter Patterson Herald ColumnistWalter Patterson Herald ColumnistSome of you will remember the movie Thelma and Louise. The movie came out in 1991 and starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon.
If I remember correctly, two young women decided to get away from their boyfriends for a weekend and wound up getting into serious trouble with the law.  Brad Pitt made his debut in this movie as a con man and petty thief.
Anyway, the end of the movie is telling. Pursued by law enforcement, the two women decided that they will not be captured alive and forced to pay the price for their crimes.  They were cornered near the Grand Canyon.  They decided that it would be better to drive their car into the Canyon than to be taken alive.  The last scene in the movie shows the car ramping over the cliff headed for the rocky terrain hundreds of feet below.  So much for Thelma and Louise.
Now I know that Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are as far-left as you can get on the political scale, but the movie clearly defines the thinking of modern day Democrats.  Democrats can run up a $17.3 trillion deficit, and then, miraculously, blame the Republicans. They can vote for some of the most hair-brained laws ever conceived by man, and if they can peel off one liberal Northeastern Republican, then when things go wrong they scream to the top of their lungs that “It was a bi-partisan vote.  We reached a compromise. Republicans are just as responsible as we are.”
There is no doubt in my mind that the Democrats are trying to “crash” our economy, and if Republicans in the House and Senate grow faint of heart, they will succeed.  Like Thelma and Louise, they will drive the car over the cliff with the American people screaming as loudly as it is humanly possible to scream that there is a better way.  “Democrats, we don’t have to do this.”
Just stop the spending.  Quit giving millions and millions to “green energy” companies that are headed for bankruptcy.  Just stop spending. Take your foot off the gas.  Get a grip.  The American taxpayer has had enough.”
But like Thelma and Louise, they have already made a pact. They had rather doom this country to third world status than to admit that liberalism has failed.
The Senate Democrats voted down Mr. Obama’s “Jobs Bill,” last week, the one he kept waving around demanding that Congress pass and send  back to him to sign. If you think that this was a “Jobs Bill,” I’ve got some really good land near the mouth of the Mississippi River that might interest you. This bill, apparently concocted at midnight with the aid of every far-left liberal in Washington, was nothing more than a “tax bill.”  It was another attempt by this Administration to funnel tax-payer dollars to unions and other Democrat operatives.
As out of touch with reality as many of the Senate Democrats are, there were some with the presence of mind to vote against this monster. They knew immediately that the folks back home would have nothing to do with this kind of wreckless legislation, and they knew that if they stuck their necks out and voted for the bill, next November may find them in the unemployment line.  Many of them have already gone too far, and next November, if things don’t make a drastic and dramatic turnaround in the meantime, many of these irresponsible liberals will be seeking a new job, something more in line with their abilities, something like ditch digger would suit me just fine.
But the Thelma and Louise Democrats are far from quitting the blame game. Steny Hoyer, that great far-left sage from Maryland and House Democrat Minority Leader “suggested Tuesday that voters are to blame for the partisan bickering and standoffs that have defined Congress this year.”
This is a novel idea.  When things don’t go as liberals want them to, simply blame the voters.  If this political strategy works, Martians will invade planet earth tomorrow night.  Liberals, socialists, leftist love to mouth the word “compromise.”  When the Democrats held majorities in both the House and Senate, “compromise” was a very dirty word.  Now that they cannot run rough shod over the American people, they are screaming like the proverbial “stuck Pig.”
Hoyer went further.  “The American people have also elected people with hard stances, so that to some degree the American people are realizing the results of their votes… In this case, many people voted for people who thought compromise was not something that they ought to participate in.”  Amen, Steny.  Winners don’t need to compromise nor should they. And by the way, with whom do we compromise?  Harry Reid?  Nancy Pelosi? Dick Durbin?  Chuck Schumer?  We can’t just stand idly by and let the Thelma and Louise Democrats drive the car into oblivion.  Democrat policy with an ever growing federal government that takes more and more money from the American people does not work.  That’s why it is important for Republicans to get control of this car come next November.
We know how to apply the brakes.
