As the college football season heads into week seven, several former Yazoo high school athletes continue to make an impact on the gridiron.
Perhaps, the biggest name to strap on a helmet at the collegiate level is Mississippi State junior Fletcher Cox. However, after missing the first game of the season due to undisclosed reason, Cox hasn’t turned into the dominating defensive tackle Bulldog coaches had hoped he would before the season. But he is still causing problems for offense throughout the SEC.
On the season, Cox has recorded 23 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss of four yards. The former Yazoo City High School standout has yet to record a sack this season after totaling 3.5 sacks his first two seasons in Starkville.
While Cox may grab the headlines, another former Yazoo athlete is finding success, lined up right alongside Cox. Kaleb Eulls, a former star at Yazoo County High School, has played in all six games for Mississippi State this year after being red shirted in 2010.
Eulls, who is listed as a defensive end, has recorded 10 tackles in his first season, two of which were for a loss of a total nine yards. He also has recorded one sack against the current No.1 team in the nation, LSU, that went for a loss of seven yards.
Unfortunately, not all former Yazoo City athletes are finding playing time in 2011. Southern Miss running back and former Yazoo City High School star Desmond Johnson has missed the past five games of the season after starting the first game against Louisiana Tech due to an apparent knee injury.
In that first game, Johnson ran the ball 13 times for 51 yards. The extent of his injury is unknown with head coach Larry Fedora stating he will not discuss specific injuries during the season.
