Coroner seeks help identifying body from flood

ShiversShiversBy JASON PATTERSON

Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers is seeking help from the public in an effort to return a man to his proper burial place.
During the flood a casket was found floating in the Yazoo River containing the body of a black male estimated to be between 60-70 years old.
“We know that he was a Mason because he was buried in Masonic attire, but that’s about all we know,” Shivers said.
The State Crime Lab has assisted in efforts to determine the man’s identity, but so far they have had no success.
“This is such a sensitive issue that I wouldn’t even be bringing it to the public if there was any other way,” Shivers said. “I just don’t like the idea of having to bury someone where they were not intended to be.”
Shivers said the casket, which he described as “gun metal” in color, had no serial number, so it was impossible to trace its origin. They were also unable to determine how long the man has been deceased.
